Our staking plan for the place is fairly simple and as the strike rate is around 83% the most run of outs you are likely to encounter is 3 and that will be rare. Anyway the way we do it is such.

Imagine you decide to bet $10 the place on your first selection and it wins then continue on with $10 bets until you come across a non placegetter. Whatever you lose you now up the bet by 4.5 so if this was $10 the next bet will be $45. If this wins at the average betfair price of $1.23 your return will be around $55 less commission so you can start again at $10. If this loses your next bet will be 55 x 4.5 which is the first $10 and the second $45, being $247. A placegetter returns $304 less commsission at average price of $1.23. Relatively back to square. We do suggest that if backing a horse for the win if suggested in the race day file then do not back it each way. If you prefer a saver back it solely for a place or 1 unit the win and 6 the place.
If you prefer a safer way to bet then bet in sets of 2 races. The first bets would be $10 on the first 2 bets. If both run a place then continue the same. If not then calculate your losses for BOTH bets. For example one places and the other doesn't then take your loss from the win and use the total loss as the 4.5 multiplier. Eg. Race one dividend is $1.2 then your win is $2. Race two loses so you lose $10 less the $2 from race one gives a total loss of $8. Next bets are 8 x 4.5 = $36 divided by the two races is $18 on each. Two collects @ $1.23 is $44 so brings you back to even.
